Some photos from the Minis trip to Castleisland last Saturday.
The minis travelled en masse to Castleisland RFC for a blitz on Saturday. Killarney RFC was represented by teams at all age groups from the Leprechauns at U7 to the U12’s. We played matches against Castleisland, Iveragh and Tralee RFC. The matches were very well contested and it was brilliant to watch all the drills, practise and matches to date pay off for our lads. Every ball was contested and the players were expertly directed by their coaches. We must thank Castleisland RFC for their fantastic hospitality and the food afterwards was thoroughly enjoyed by one and all! Very well done to all the children who travelled and a huge thanks you to all the parents who brought their kids and supported them from the touch line on the day.
South Munster Under 18s League phase 2 quarter final, South Kerry v Muskerry
South Kerry hosted Muskerry in their quarter final phase 2 league match on Saturday 7th March in Killarney. South Kerry asserted superiority at scrum and line out but thanks to strong Muskerry defence couldn’t get on the score board. However, after 20 minutes the home team were awarded a penalty on the Muskerry 22. Dylan Sheahan tapped and went (very!) quickly past the Muskerry defence to touch down out wide on the left for an unconverted try. In the next 10 minutes both sides had attacking phases and the result was a penalty for each side, score now 8-3. South Kerry from an attack had a lineout just inside the Muskerry 22. Tiarnan Clifford got the ball about 7 metres from the line and 1 metre from touch. He drove strong and straight for a great touchdown and team try. Muskerry came very close to scoring on the stroke of half time but were held up and then the ball was picked for Patrick Courtney to surge up the pitch before offloading. The successful move looked destined for a knock out try but was called back for a forward pass leaving a half time score of 13-3 in favour of South Kerry.
Muskerry roared back into the contest on the restart. Attacking play saw their scrum half break from a ruck, outstripping the whole defence to touch down. South Kerry must be credited for their strong and composed reaction. They played most of the next 15 minutes in away territory and from a 5 metre scrum Danny O’Sullivan burst for the line. He was held up but as quick ball came from the ruck Dylan Sheahan surged over for his second try of the match. Neil O’Brien landed the conversion. South Kerry continued to press and were awarded a penalty to the left of the posts which Neil converted putting 13 points between the teams. Muskerry fought back and having been held up several times scored a converted try with 8 minutes remaining. The final score of 23-17 reflected accurately on two very committed and sporting teams who gave it everything. South Kerry now go on to play Clonakilty away on Saturday 14th March at 12.30 p.m in the semi-final. All supporters will be very welcome as the team strive to make the final.
Best of luck to our U18 boys who take on Rugbai Chorca Dhuibhne in the U18 West Munster Cup final this Sunday. Kick off at O’Dowd Park (Tralee RFC) is at 2:30pm and all support very welcome. Good luck to all players, coaches and team management.
