Killarney RFC Supporters News Update – Feb 2015

 In Club

Dear Supporter,

I hope you don’t mind me taking this opportunity to let you know how we are doing at the Club and to let you know where your generous support has gone in recent weeks and how we are progressing?

Many of you will know, at Aghadoe, we have three playing fields seeded, sanded and under grass. Club Captain, Ger Moynihan’s father has done fantastic work on superb gates which with the help of Carroll Engineering are now hanging proudly at a fine entrance. More work is required to tidy up the driveway and car park and there is quite a bit of landscaping to be done to formalise boundaries and enhance the site.

Thanks to great work done by Liam McGuire, Coca-Cola Ireland awarded a prize to the club as part of its “Thank You” initiative to community projects, and the prize fund will be put towards the construction of a “Trim Trail” – an exercise track which will hug the boundaries of the entire site. Every 100 metres or so, exercise equipment will be available, and we hope this facility can be open to the whole community to avail of as a healthy amenity. Other tasks have priority at present but this will be done as soon as the site is ready for it. Again a huge thanks to Ger and Jenna Moynihan for their engineering and physio input into winning the award.

A provisional prefabricated clubhouse has been installed and will contain home and away dressing rooms, showers and a communal area for meetings, etc. Other containers and office units can be used as canteen/kitchen and shop facilities for hosting events and merchandise on site. This was procured from Castlegregory Golf Club and should more than do the job until we have a proper structure.

There is still a huge amount of development to be done on an all-weather training area at the deep end of the site. Funds gratefully received from the Government’s Capital Grant Scheme have been well exhausted to fund many suppliers who have been engaged in developing the site thus far. Indeed we are extremely grateful to all contractors and specialists who have been very generous with their time, resources and affording us generous credit terms. That said, the need for funds is ongoing. We thank Paul Murphy for great work in organising the Night at the Dogs in November. This was a great fundraiser and indeed some funds are yet to be collected. Many thanks to all who attended and led fundraising teams.

Our street Collection on December 27th raised €1,350. Our thanks to all those who lined out in very cold conditions. It was well down on other years and we could have done with more help but it is a task we are going to do each year regardless.

6 Nations Ticket Draw

I ask you to please support the current initiative – a raffle draw for 2 tickets to the Ireland V England game in the 6 Nations. These tickets are gold-dust and draw tickets to win those can be had @ €5 each or a book of 3 for €10. These are available from all players of all ages and all members should have a supply of these. The distribution of these has been done through all team coaches and I ask that you get tickets and monies in to your coach as soon as possible. The draw takes place 25th February before the match which is on 1st March. Please return all funds to myself or Mike Walker (Treasurer) as soon as possible.

We are also looking at the possible launch of a major fundraising draw later in the year.

Our Minis (age 6 up to 12) are in full swing and we are getting huge numbers to training on Saturday mornings at Knockreer beside the playground near the Cathedral from 10:30 to 12pm. Blitzes are held at different Kerry clubs every month and are the highlight of the season when boys and girls test their skills for real. Parents have been brilliant in bringing goodies along to the home blitzes to feed all teams participating.

Finally, some home fixtures we would dearly love to have your support at please:

Saturday 7th Feb – at Dirreen, Killarney at 11:30 South Kerry (Killarney-Killorglin U18s) v Ballincollig

Sunday 8th February at 2.30pm at Dirreen, Killarney XV play Ballincollig RFC in Div. 2 League and this is a vital game for survival for Killarney as they try to overcome Youghal in the points table. We would dearly like support on the day. Free admission.

My thanks to you and your family for your continued support.

Best regards,

Mike Fuller

Club President
