Mini’s:

Following the cancelled away trip to Kenmare the previous weekend, our minis welcomed teams from Tralee RFC and Killorglin RFC for some friendly matches. Tralee sent teams at U7, U8 and U9 ages, while Killorglin sent players at U10 and U12 age grades. This meant that there was a fantastic buzz around Knockreer on Saturday morning. Some fantastic rugby was on display by all players and we must say how proud we are of our Killarney RFC charges who played their hearts out and put into practise everything they have learned. The number of children turning out to training is a true credit to Tom and his coaches. Also the kids are a credit to their parents and their attitude and love for rugby shows! Keep up the good work! Training as normal next Saturday (10:30am at Knockreer).

U14’s:

Killorglin 17 Killarney 34 – Killarney travelled to Killorglin last Saturday morning. A hard fought but sporting contest. Killarney opened the scoring with a try by Conor Sheahan converted by Sean Murphy then Sean scored a try himself in the corner.  Killarney were awarded a  penalty try when Damien Switzer was held back from scoring without the ball, Sean converted with a drop kick.  We led  19 pts to 10pts at the break. Both teams playing open attractive rugby Killorglin scored  a try from a well placed kick taken it 19 pts to 17pts going into the last ten minutes. Conor Sheahan struck again with a superb run converted by Sean Murphy who finished off the Killorglin challenge with a lovely try and a late penalty. This was a great team performance. The forwards tackled and harried Killorglin and provided plenty of ball for the backs to use. The standout players were Adam Walsh, Evan Manix, Eoghan Pattwell, Craig Mc Kenzie, Michael Horgan , Richard Wallace Mark Neary .

U16’s:

Pan Munster U16’s –KRFC 8 Ballincollig 3 – Killarney hosted Ballincollig on Saturday morning. The scoring was opened by a penalty, which was taken by Oisin O’Shea. Later in the match a well worked try was finished off by Mike Healy. The resultant conversion was just missed and our boys ran out the victors with a 5 point win over Ballincollig.

U18’s

South Munster Under 18s League Phase 2, South Kerry 33 Ballincollig 17

South Kerry hosted Ballincollig in their first phase 2 league match on Saturday 7th February in Killarney. The game was played in perfect weather conditions. South Kerry kicked off but Ballincollig ran the ball back at them. Following a succession of rolling mauls they were awarded a penalty which was kicked to the corner. The next 10 minutes saw a succession of Ballincollig attacks through their forwards with mauls, pick and go plays and narrow passes. All these were resisted until South Kerry were penalised 25 metres out close to the posts. Ballincollig kicked for goal but the kick went left of the uprights. Play continued in this vein until from a line out near half way Ben Eadie pounced on a loose ball kicking upfield along the left touch line. Following up he reached the ball first and kicked the ball over the try line and was first to fall on it for a great try. Jesse McCormack landed the conversion 7-0. Continuing forward pressure was mounted by Ballincollig but South Kerry were starting to run some great back moves off set piece ball. From one play they found themselves on the Ballincollig 22. Though Ballincollig regained possession they couldn’t clear. Cathal Doyle got to a loose ball first, kicked ahead and fell on the ball over the try line close to the posts for a second try which was also converted by Jesse McCormack. This left the half time score at 14-0 to the hosts.

Ballincollig started the second half strongly using the same tactics. They carried a rolling maul deep into the home 22 but this was brilliantly broken up by Liam King and the ball was cleared upfield ending in a South Kerry scrum on the Ballincollig 22. The home scrum which had been very strong to date was pushed back on this occasion but the ball was picked by scrum half Dylan Sheahan who drew the man then fed Liam King who ran strongly to touch down near the left corner. Though the conversion was missed, South Kerry had got the vital first score of the second half and now led 19-0. South Kerry enjoyed a period of control then and quick thinking allied with excellent back play saw a sweeping back move from the home 22 to a surging run by Tiarnan Clifford for a tremendous try on the Ballincollig right. Jesse McCormack landed the conversion for a 26-0 lead. Ballincollig kept their heads up and continued to press strongly and after fierce resistance crashed over for an unconverted try. South Kerry introduced fresh legs and attacked again. A loose kick from the Ballincollig defence was superbly fielded by Tiarnan Clifford who attacked then passed to the supporting Neil O’Brien for a fifth try again superbly converted by Jesse McCormack for 33-5. For the last 10 minutes South Kerry emptied the bench and credit to Ballincollig who kept pressing and were rewarded with two late consolation tries leaving a final score of 33-17 for South Kerry.

Great credit is due to every one of the 22 players who gave everything in this match from good scrums and line outs, strong tackling and most of all brilliant concerted back play with all 7 backs linking up in deadly attacking. Its on now to our next match away to Kanturk next weekend. Supporters very welcome!!

Munster Junior League, Division 2 – Killarney 8 Ballincollig 17.

Hoping to bounce on from last week’s Junior Cup win with a win in the league, Killarney faced a stern test against Ballincollig. This was always going to be a very hard fought match with so much at stage in Division 2. For a while, earlier in the morning it looked as though we would be covered in a shroud of fog, however the fog lifted and the sun blazed through to make perfect conditions before kick-off. Killarney played well with the opening exchanges going our way. However a sin bin for Killarney allowed Ballincollig to get over for a try. This was followed up in quick succession by another sin bin for Killarney and another try for Ballincollig. Both tries were unconverted. Paul O’Sullivan slotted home a penalty to give the home side points on the board, however, Ballincollig ran over for a well worked try to leave the scoreline at 3 points to 17 at half time, in favour of the visitors. The second half started with both teams contesting everthing and Killarney’s hard work paid off when Alan Muligan went over for a try, which went unconverted. The game finished 17 points to 8 in favour of Ballincollig. Killarney will feel that points were left on the pitch as the work rate by the lads deserved a better scoreline. Luck wasn’t on our side today. The next game for the senior XV is away to St. Mary’s in the Munster Junior Cup next weekend.
