Line out time!

Last Saturday Killarney RFC Minis hosted the first round of the west Munster Minis Blitz. On the day we also created history as we hosted our first ever ‘Girls-only’ rugby matches. In development for 3 years, since our first girls took to our pitches, we were extremely proud to be in a position to host girls from Tralee RFC and Killorglin RFC for a match.

In the intervening few seasons, we brought the Rugby World Cup Trophy to Cullina, Fossa and Faha National Schools and brought our girls to Thomond Park to watch a Munster Match. Last summer we brought the girls to the Rugby World Cup in Dublin and it was a very proud occasion to see so many girls in Killarney colours take part last weekend.

Since the minis returned to training at the start of September we now have 20 girls playing rugby each and every Saturday. It is fair to say that KRFC Girls section is the success story of  girls rugby and continues to flourish. This is due to the hard work and vision of our coaches Denise Treacy, Liam Murphy and Ed Stack who developed the section with hard work and enthusiasm over the past 3 years. This season we are joined by Peter O’Shaughnessy and Fiona Landers adding a wealth of experience to the set up.

We aim to take part in Girls Rugby blitzes every month going forward with ourselves, Tralee, Listowel, Abbeyfeale and Mallow also taking part. This will give the girls fantastic playing experience and they will still play and train with  the boys and take part in the minis blitzes across the season as we develop the section to the next level.
