Developing Girls Rugby in Killarney and beyond:

The pathways for girls rugby at Killarney RFC have grown immensely in the last few years. This has been down to the fantastic work ethic of the members of the committee who identified Girls rugby as a key objective for development back in 2016.

Driven at the start by Minis Coordinator Liam Murphy, Denise Treacy and Fiona Landers with help from then Community Rugby Officer Denis Corridan, we have come a long way in 8 years!

Killarney RFC have actively utilized social media platforms, local newspapers, annual IRFU “Give it a Try” programmes, and the best promotion of all our work itself. Killarney RFC are recognized within the community and its hinter land as being supportive and developing of rugby for underage players. This was been recognized in recent times with the club being awarded Mini club and Youth club of the year for Munster in 2018.

Our U18 team ironically flourished during Covid 19 restrictions as it provided a welcome opportunity for many young ladies to try out rugby. A opportunity that has enabled Killarney RFC to now have an U18 team going forward into Munster competitions making the U18 Development League final in 2022 and League and Cup semi finals in 2023 as well as winning the U18 Munster league in February 2024!

The success of the numbers coming to Girls rugby at all ages has been greatly helped from the support of the Munster Development officers. Willie Schubert, Ken Imbusch and Brian O’Dowd along with the Community Development officers have attended training throughout the seasons providing expert tuition and advice to our Minis U14, U16 and U18 ladies.

Top class coaching and training along with in house expertise and support have led to a number of Killarney RFC ladies representing the club on Munster development teams, Munster squads and we had our first Ireland Cap with Lily Morris t U18 level in 2023. A hugely positive sign of immense growth in a relative short space of time.

Killarney rugby club is only as strong as its members, of which our playing and club membership have steadily risen. As always, the parents are the prominent supporters of the club, regularly transporting players to pitches all over Munster in unpredictable weather conditions all with smiles on their faces. Killarney RFC are proud, and all its members stand proud in the town with a GAA stronghold, testimony to the continued outstanding work of the committee.

in 2022 our amazing U16 went and secured their place in history winning the Munster U16 League and Cup double, and in 2023 our U14 girls won the Development Plate and then in February 2024 our U18 girls won the U18 Munster league! Since then we have girls representing Munster at both U16 and U18 levels as well as at Ireland level! The future looks bright!
