U18.5 Boys Munster Cup – Group 4 Killarney RFC 20 Garryowen RFC 15

Killarney’s U18.5 boys now stand second in their group after 4 matches with a home game to Midleton next up on weekend of Jan 27/28

Killarney backed up their away win last week at Garryowen with a home victory at Aghadoe. Killarney opened the scoring with a try from Bryan Walsh. Walsh later added a penalty to give Killarney an 8-0 lead early on. A second try from Bryan Walsh with the same player adding the conversion had Killarney 15-0 ahead at half-time. In the second half, Garryowen came back into the game with a converted try, following it with a penalty to trail only 15-10. A third try from Killarney by Alex O’Leary extended our lead to 20-10. A second Garryowen try reduced the lead to 20-15 going into the final 10 minutes. Neither side was able to add to their tally in the remaining time.

U16 Boys Munster Cup – Group 3 Kanturk RFC 8 Killarney RFC 31

Killarney travelled to a Kanturk team looking for revenge for their defeat the previous week. Kanturk opted to play down the slope in the first half but it was Killarney who opened the scoring from a quickkly taken penalty, Liam McCarthy put left winger Billy O’Donoghue away. O’Donoghue raced away from the cover to score under the posts leaving Cian Stack with a straightforward conversion to give Killarney a 7-0. The score remained 7-0 at the break as Kanturk missed 2 kickable penalties and despite both teams having chances to add to their score.

In the second half, we had the advantage of the slope and were able to push Kanturk deep – our second try came from a chargedown by Arthur Gabbett who blocked a clearance kick and regathered to score under the posts. Cathal Sugrue added a conversion to leave Killarney 14-0 ahead after 5 minutes of the second half. Lightning was to strike twice a few minutes later as Gabbett charged down another attempted clearance and raced away to score in the corner. The difficult conversion wasn’t successful but now we led 19-0. Managing the advantage of the hill we were able to make Kanturk play from deep and Cian Stack intercepted a loose pass and put the supporting Eli Anderson in for the fourth try. Cathal Sugrue added his second conversion. Killarney’s scoring was completed when Billy O’Donoghue scored his second try to push the score out to 31-0. Kanturk broke their duck with a penalty and added a try at the final whistle.

Tries – O’Donoghue(2), Gabbett(2), Anderson; Con – Sugrue(2), Stack;

We are top of our group with upcoming games with Midleton (home) and Skibbereen (away).
